In the past there has been a large, artificial Christmas tree in the fountain in front of the World Trade Center. It was sponsored by the nearby Krispy Kreme shop and was always decorated with giant donuts. Last week they set up the tree, and yesterday I saw that they had completed decorating it. It is no longer a Krispy Kreme tree.
The decorations are inscribed with both "Feliz Navidad" and "Merry Christmas". There are also decorations that say in Spanish, "Peace, Union, Harmony, Success, Faith".
At the other end of the fountain there was a rather odd form of decoration. A bunch of large Christmas ornaments were bunched together, floating in the water.
I suspect the designer thought the ornaments would look cool scattered throughout the fountain pool. However, the motion of the water has pushed them all into one area.
I returned that evening, to see the tree lit up at night.
My recollection is that you're usually in Ohio for Christmas itself. If that's so, are you enjoying the build-up to the holiday more? Are you noticing many new things/celebrations/events this time compared to previous trips that you previously wanted to go to but were never around for?
ReplyDeleteYou're correct, Meredith. This will be my first Christmas in Mexico City. I am enjoying the build-up to the holidays, which will be even more obvious after December 12th, the Feast Day of the Virgen of Guadalupe. The holiday season lasts until January 6th (Epiphany or the Día de los Reyes), so the month of celebration is sometimes referred to by Mexicans as "Guadalupe - Reyes". Nine days before Christmas the "posadas" (neighborhood processions representing Joseph and Mary looking for room at the inn) begin. However, this year Alejandro's family aren't planning on holding a "posada".
