On our recent trip to San Miguel de Allende, we saw something that we had not seen before. Several stores had signs advertising a chocolate treat called "Pedos de monja".
In case you don't speak Spanish, or if your Spanish does not include certain words that are not usually used in polite society, "pedos de monja" means "nun's farts". I laughed out loud when I saw these, and my mind went back to a trip to Spain quite a few years ago when I visited the picturesque town of Chinchón. There all the bakeries featured "tetas de novicia" (novice's tits) and "pelotas de fraile" (friar's balls).
There is also a connection to Spain with the "pedos de monja". In the 1800s there was an Italian baker in Barcelona who made a type of cookie called "petto di monja" (nun's chest). The residents of Barcelona pronounced the Italian word "petto" like "pedo", and the mispronounced name stuck.
The "pedos de monja" in Mexico are similar to a chocolate truffle, and they are actually made in Querétaro, a city located about 60 miles from San Miguel de Allende, by a company named "Palacio de Chocolate". Their slogan is ¨Más vale adentro que afuera¨. (Better inside than out.)
We bought several bags of "farts", but I have not yet tasted them.
