Two weekends ago, Alejandro and I had tickets for a special performance of the Ballet Folklórico. The dance troupe was founded in 1952 by choreographer Amalia Hernández, and has become arguably the foremost performing arts group in Mexico. They present the diverse folk music and dances from the different regions of Mexico.
Unfortunately I cannot upload any video clips onto the blog that are more than 30 seconds long, but here are a few short scenes from the ballet...
From the state of Guerrero...
Another segment presents the songs of the Mexican Revolution...
One of my favorite portions of the ballet is the "Fiesta en Veracruz" featuring the lively "jarocho" music of that state on the gulf coast.
The Deer Dance of the Yaqui tribe from the deserts of northern Mexico is an athletic "tour de force".
So what was so special about this performance of the ballet? There was a very special guest that evening...
