Back in April of last year, Alejandro and I went to see a presentation called "Van Gogh - Live". Held in a large, tent-like structure in a Mexico City park, the show was described as an "immersive experience". You were surrounded by projected images of Van Gogh's paintings while classical music from the era played. Similar shows have been held throughout the world including in my hometown of Cleveland. The concept has been copied, and I have seen advertisements here in Mexico City for "immersive experiences" dealing with the art of Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dalí.
The most recent show that I saw advertised is called "Monet and Friends". It is being held in the same facility where the Van Gogh show was presented. Alejandro went on-line, and we got tickets to see it last Sunday. It actually deals with many of the Impressionist painters of late 19th century Paris, not just Monet. The presentation also included paintings by artists such as Pisarro, Degas, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir and even a few post-Impressionists like Seurat and Cezanne. My biggest criticism was this lack of focus. Unless you were very familiar with painters' work, you would not know whose works you were viewing. Along with the projections of the artwork there were also historic and current photographs as well as popular pieces of classical music. Although I think that "Van Gogh - Live" was better, I certainly enjoyed this show also.
