Today we turn the calendar to April. My calendar, which I made with photos that I took at the Cleveland Museum of Art, has an appropriate work of art for the Easter season.
A "pieta" is a depiction of Mary cradling Christ's dead body. Of course, the most famous "pieta" is the marble sculpture in the Vatican that was carved by Michelangelo. This one, carved from lindenwood, polychromed and gilded, was done by an unknown Bavarian sculptor in the 16th century. In German a "pieta" is known as a "Verperbild" because viewers were encouraged to contemplate Christ's suffering at Good Friday vespers.
