For Better or for "Wurst"

All over Vienna you will see stands such as this one which sell a variety of "Wurst"... sausages.

This "Würstelstand" is located at the tram stop in front of the opera house.

A little bit of etymology here.  The German word for Vienna is "Wien" (pronounced "veen").  A person or a thing which comes from "Wien" is a "Wiener".  So that other word that we use for a hot dog indicates that it comes from Vienna.  Of course we also call our hot dogs frankfurters which would indicate that they come from Frankfurt, Germany.

Anyway, I have stopped a couple times at "Wurst" stands here in Vienna.  Don't expect anything quite like our hot dogs on a long bun.  Sometimes the sausage is served on a roll, but often the sausage is cut into pieces, and a slice of "brot"... bread... is served to the side.  Both times that I have gone to a "Wurst" stand that is the way the "Wurst" has been served. I suppose that you are supposed to take a bite of bread and then a bite of sausage.  They give you a little, wooden, two-pronged pick for eating the pieces of sausage.

At this stand I had ordered a "Currywurst".

The pieces of sausage were covered with catsup and mustard and sprinkled (a little too heavily in my opinion) with curry powder.  It came with a side of fries and a slice of bread.  I ordered a popular Austrian soft drink called "Almdudler".  I can't describe the taste, but I didn't particularly care for it.

A visit to the "Würstelstand" makes for an inexpensive (although not very healthy) meal.
