A "Monumental" Fountain

Mexico City has many fountains, but not all of them are running all of the time.  Perhaps it is because of the city's water shortage, although I would think that the water is recycled.

One fountain that I had never seen running is one along Insurgentes Avenue, about three quarters of a mile from my apartment.  The colonial-style fountain is quite attractive, although often the basin was filled with stagnant green water.

So, I was rather surprised when I passed by there and saw the water flowing.

It looks nice, although I think some of the nozzles need some cleaning or repair since they are not all spraying evenly.  Last night we passed the fountain on the Metrobus, and I noticed that it was illuminated with blue lights.

On Google Maps I was able to find the fountain's name.  It's called "La Monumental".  Although it is a fairly large fountain, I wouldn't call it monumental in size.  It was built in 1942 in the era when new neighborhoods like Nápoles (where I live) and Colonia del Valle were being developed along Insurgentes Avenue.  It sits in a semi-circular green area known as Plaza California, and was designed as an impressive entrance to the exclusive neighborhood of San Borja.  It's nice to see this fountain functioning again.
