Back to the Museum of Popular Arts

I have written many times here about the Museum of Popular Arts, my favorite small museum in Mexico City.  I return there time and time again because several times a year they have special exhibits that are worth seeing.  On Wednesday I went back, but before I even made it to the exhibit, I had to stop and take some pictures at the entrance and in the courtyard.

The museum is the sponsor of the annual Parade of Monumental Alebrijes.  Regular readers of my blog know that each October around 200 large, papier mâché figures of fantastical creatures are paraded down the city streets.  The museum always has a few of those parade entries on display.

In addition to the alebrijes, there were several enormous Day of the Dead figures on display in the courtyard.  I asked the guard about them, but he didn't seem to know much.  He said they were made for some event, went on tour, and then were returned to the museum.

These figures are also made of papier mâché, but the one above was done to imitate the famous black pottery of Oaxaca.

Next, on to the special exhibit...
